FAQ

Is there a cafe?

Contrary to our name we are not a cafe, we are a group of individuals getting together to build skills, share knowledge, change the way we perceive fashion and textiles, and make an impact through direct personal and community action. We meet in various places around Lancaster District rather than in one location.

How do I get involved?

Turn up to our regular activities, workshops or events and get stuck in. There’s no expectation to come to everything, but we could use more volunteers at mending stations and repair events to make the events run smoother.

Do I need a ticket?

If it’s a regular activity like Beer & Yarn or Marsh Mending you can just turn up. If we have an event on with tickets (most of which are free) we ask you to sign up so we know who to expect. If there are tickets, they’ll be linked in the event listing.

Do you fix sewing machines or offer sewing lessons on machines?

Sorry we do not. If you have general questions we can offer advice.

If you’d like machine repairs, members have recommended: Sew Green and The Sewistry

What if I don’t know how to sew?

Not a problem – most of our activities involve hand-sewing only and we always bring extra tools and supplies. We can help you get started and lend you equipment. If it’s a mending activity, bring something you’d like to mend.

Is there a way to communicate with the group?

We use WhatsApp and a Facebook group for event reminders, sharing current projects we’re working on, and asking general questions about mending. If you’d like to join the WhatsApp Group please email sewingcafelancaster@gmail.com with your phone number.
